Mapping an Engineer is an interactive exhibit experience which links geographic locations throughout Peru, with entry dates in a journal written by Joseph Phineas Davis (RPI, Class of 1856). Davis was hired by the Peruvian Government between 1861 - 1865 to conduct surveys of Guano deposits on various islands off the coast of Peru as well as conduct various other civil engineering projects (making recommendations for new bridges, surveying Incan ruins, making suggestions for repairs on municipal buildings, etc.). Our metadata allows you to follow Davis on his travels from the city of Lima, to Callao, then to the Guanape Islands and explore relationships between dates, places and topics mentioned in his entries.
