Expedition for the survey of the guano deposits in Peru, lying to the north of Lima, 1863-1864, and trip to Puno and Cuzco, 1864
Description
This journal details Davis’s travels and surveying of guano deposits lying to the north of Lima, Peru between 1863-1864. Though not the first of Davis’ journals, it represents the vast majority of geographic locations Davis traveled to for topographical surveying of guano deposits for the Peruvian Government. Throughout the journal and within the various entries, Davis provides detailed accounts ranging from frustrations at sea and with surveying equipment to days-long topographical surveying, boring, and drilling on the Guanape Islands. An additional journal exists within this volume titled Trip to Puno and Cuzco, 1864 which has only one entry date and briefly describes the preparation for a trip Davis and his party are asked to take in order to steer clear of the impending Spanish invasion of the Chincha Islands.
*Davis was doing surveying work for the Peruvian Government between 1863-1864 on lands home to the Wari, Quechua, Quechua-Kichwa, and Chimú indigenous peoples.
